The sale-topping male, Juddmonte Farms' David Ingordo, brought $8,000, and the highest-priced filly, ESPN's Jeannine Edwards, went for $5,500. In all, the 17 men and women in the sale brought $46,900, with an average price of $2,759 per horseman.
The leading consignor of the sale was Taylor Made Sales, selling $10,900, with an average of $2,725 per horseman. Leprechaun Racing followed closely behind, selling $10,100 but with an average of $3,366. Matching donations from all consignors -- which included Padua Stables, Denali Stud, Eisaman Equine, Ocala Breeders' Sales, the McKathan Bros., and West Point Thoroughbreds -- would bring the total Horsemen Sale earnings to $93,800.
In addition to the Horsemen, a quartet of live auction items added another $13,000 to the scholarship fund. A Katherine Landikusic painting brought $5,000, a trip for two to the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships at Lone Star Park garnered $3,500, batting practice with the World Champion Florida Marlins earned $2,500, and a day of polo with the Crab Orchard Polo Team made $2,000.
"We were all blown away by the amounts bid," said Elisabeth Jensen, executive director of The Race For Education. "I'm so grateful not only for the scholarship money raised but for the show of support from the racing community in Florida."
The Race For Education is a national education scholarship foundation funded by various parties related to, or with an interest in the Thoroughbred racing industry. It is a nonprofit organization established to improve the quality of life for farm and track workers' families through education, attract younger and better-educated individuals to the careers in the Thoroughbred industry, and establish the racing industry as a good citizen in the community.
