Edited press release from Tattersalls
The average rose 29% and the median price was up 49% during the four days of foal sales conducted by Tattesalls Ltd. at the company's paddocks in Newmarket, England. The foal portion of the sale preceded the sale of broodmares and horses in training that began Monday.

Tattersalls reported 608 lots sold for 14,677,400 guineas, with the average increasing 29% to a record 24,140 guineas and the median up 49% to 12,500 guineas. A total of 26 foals made 100,000 guineas or more compared with 21 last year.

"The 29% rise in average price is the sign of a very successful sale but it is the record median figure, up a massive 49%, which really tells the story of the week's trade, " said Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony: "From the word 'go' we have seen extremely strong demand which has reflected the strength of the yearling sales here at park paddocks this autumn. In overall terms this was perhaps not a vintage catalog, and the number of withdrawals was exceptionally high, but competition has been intense at all levels of the market from start to finish. The British and Irish pinhookers have been trading blows all week, we have also seen numerous pinhookers from throughout Europe, North America and even further afield and it has been equally encouraging to see so many foals bought to race."

Two lots shared top billing on the final day of the foal sale with Lots 1140 and 1269 both making 230,000 guineas to head proceedings on a day where the average was up 26% to 35,813 guineas and the median up 67% to 20,000 guineas.

The first crop of Desert Prince have been highly sought after all week and it was no exception with Lot 1140, a chesnut filly out of Green Rosy. The half-sister to group winners America and Majorien was purchased by Charlie Gordon-Watson on behalf of Tom Wilson. The Northern Irish owner will board the filly at Watership Down Stud before she goes to John Oxx's stable to be trained.

Later in the evening, Anthony Stroud paid 230,000 for Lot 1269, a chesnut colt by Gone West out of Madame Est Sortie. The half-brother to group winners Majoune and Mousse Glacee was purchased on behalf of an overseas client who may resubmit the horse next year.

Group 1 sire Machiavellian also figured prominently in the highest priced lots with Lots 1205 and 1263 making 195,000 and 215,000 guineas respectively. The first of these offered was the bay filly out of the Group winning Echoes who was purchased by Brendan Morrin of Swordlestown Stud. Lot 1263, the bay filly out of LITTLEWICK was purchased by Coolmore's Tammy Twomey for 215,000 guineas after she outbid John Ferguson acting on behalf of Japanese interests. The filly is a half-sister to Chilian Group 1 winner Fontanella Borghese.

The sale resumes at 9.30am on Monday 4th December with broodmares, fillies and colts in training, and runs through Thursday 7th December.
