The amazing story of Amazing Philly continued Wednesday as she made her first start at Philadelphia Park. She finished third, under Orlando Bocachica, while competing in a five-furlong maiden claiming event. Race fans might remember Amazing Philly as the surprise foal of Speak Compelling, produced at Philadelphia Park in 2000. Before her birth, no one could explain why her mother ran so poorly on Jan. 19 and after her birth, no one could explain how she was conceived. After Amazing Philly literally appeared at Philadelphia Park, she and her dam were shipping to a Pennsylvania farm. Speak Compelling, a daughter of Compelling Sound, went back into training for William and Lynda Gallagher about three months later. In July of 2000 Speak Compelling proved she had recovered fully by setting a Philadelphia Park course record, covering a mile on the track's turf course in 1:39.77. Speak Compelling ended up making 50 starts for the Gallaghers through March of last year. Amazing Philly also races for the Gallaghers. Charles Robbins, who saddled her dam for her last seven starts, is her trainer. Even with her questionable parentage, Amazing Philly is permitted to race, but her foals will not be able to be registered with The Jockey Club.
