Kentucky Derby fans backed such promising young stars as Eurosilver, Lion Heart, Action This Day and Read the Footnotes, but the heavy favorite at the end of four days of wagering in Pool 1 of Churchill Downs' 2004 Kentucky Derby Future Wager was the "mutuel field."
The "all other" betting interest was favored at 9-5 at the close of wagering Sunday.
Total betting in the first of three KDFW pools in 2004 finished at $536,958, which included $270,650 wagered on the pool's final day. The total is the second highest for Pool l, which has recorded the largest betting totals of the three pools in each of the Future Wager's previous five years. It also ranks second in total wagering among the 16 KDFW pools conducted since the inaugural wager in 1999. A record $577,889 was wagered during Pool 1 of 2002.
Other Kentucky Derby 130 contenders that received strong include the Nick Zito-trained duo of Eurosilver (11-1) and Birdstone (12-1). Next came a trio of contenders at 14-1: 2003 juvenile champion Action This Day, Hollywood Futurity (gr. I) winner Lion Heart, and Read the Footnotes, a gritty and impressive winner of Saturday's Fountain of Youth (gr. II) at Gulfstream. Tapit closed at 17-1 while Santa Catalina (gr. II) hero Master David finished at 19-1.
But the mutuel field, which included all 3-year-olds other than the 23 individual horses listed among the pool's 24 wagering interests, was the fans' choice in Pool 1 for the sixth time in as many years. Heavy wagering on the pool's opening day, including a $30,000 wager placed on the field just minutes into the betting on Thursday, drove the odds on the field down sharply.
Further betting was suspended Sunday on Fountain of Youth runner-up Second of June. Trainer Bill Cesare revealed that the colt had suffered a leg injury in the race and would require surgery. Second of June will be sidelined indefinitely.
A total of $13,661 had been wagered on Second of June through the first three days of Pool 1 and the colt's odds stood at 15-1 at the conclusion of Saturday's betting.
There are no refunds in the Derby Future Wager.
Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager is set for March 11-14. The third and last of this year's three pools will run from April 1-4. The 130th running of the $1 million guaranteed Kentucky Derby (gr. I), is May 1 at Churchill Downs. 2004 KENTUCKY DERBY FUTURE WAGER - POOL 1 FINAL ODDS
