Summer Mis Named Illinois Horse of the Year

Richard Otto Stables' homebred Summer Mis was voted the 2003 Illinois champion older filly/mare and Illinois Horse of the Year, it was announced Thursday by John Bauman, president of the Illinois Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Foundation. Balloting was done by members of the Illinois racing media and racing secretaries.Summer Miss a 5-year-old daughter of Summer Squall out of the Miswaki mare Julie Miss, won six of eight starts in 2003 and earned $286,495 for Otto and trainer Anthony Mitchell. She sports a 9-1-1 career slate from 16 starts and $414,883 in earnings.Her breakout win in 2003 came against open company in the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (gr. III) at Keeneland in October. She got the six furlongs in 1:09.77, winning by a head over Don't Countess Out. Locally, she won the Isaac Murphy Handicap in June at Arlington Park and closed out her 2003 campaign with a 2 3/4-length score in the Powerless Handicap at Hawthorne. The latter two stakes were for Illinois-breds at six furlongs.Summer Mis' younger sister, Julie's Prize, by El Prado was named champion 3-year-old filly. She was also bred and is owned by Richard Otto Stables.Lady Theodora, a 17-year-old daughter of Mari's Book--Nice'n Royal, by King Emperor owned by Crown's Way Farm, was named Illinois Broodmare of the Year.
