Big Early Wager Drops Odds on Derby Field Entry

A $30,000 wager on the mutuel field – all 3-year-olds other than the 23 assigned to the pool – by an unidentified patron enlivened the early minutes of the first of four days of betting in Pool 1 of Churchill Downs' 2004 Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

The large wager was placed within the opening 15 minutes of betting on the four-day pool. Odds on the mutuel field tumbled to 1-9 when the wager was reflected on the odds board, while the prices on the pool's 23 individual horses instantly soared to 99-1.

By the end of the first day's wagering, the field was down to 1-5. Master David, winner of last weekend's Sham Stakes at Santa Anita, was – at 15-1 – the lowest price among individual entries. Others who received action were Lion Heart (19-1), Eurosilver (30-1), and juvenile champion Action This Day and Tapit (both 40-1). A total of $96,706 was registered in the pool as of about 10 p.m. EST.

Real Time Future Wager Odds

Action was slow on the first day of Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, with just $4,930 bet. In its second year, this is the first time the Oaks has had more than a single future pool.

Class Above was the early 5-2 favorite (from 20-1 morning line), while Juvenile filly champion Halfbridled was the 3-1 second choice. The mutuel field sits at 5-1. A.P. Adventure (16-1), Ashado (17-1), Miss Coronado (18-1) and La Reina (19-1) also garnered support.

Wagering ends in Pool 1 on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
