Bold Forbes at Santa Anita

Bold Forbes, one of the best 2-year-olds of 1975, didn't look the part of a Kentucky Derby (gr. I) contender the first part of his 3-year-old at Santa Anita. After closing out his juvenile season at the track on the last day of the year with his first career loss in eight starts, he ran second in the San Miguel Stakes in January. Then on Valentine's Day, he finished third in the San Vicente Stakes (gr. III) at Santa Anita after blowing a 2 1/2-length lead at the eighth pole. But things soon picked up.

Bold Forbes captured the San Jacinto Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita in late February, then was shipped to New York for his final preps. His time of 1:20 4/5 in the Bay Shore Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct was three-fifths of a second off the seven-furlong track record.

Bold Forbes' performance in the 1 1/8-mile Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I) at the Big A was even more uplifting to owner E. R. Tizol and trainer Laz Barerra. The colt's time of 1:47 2/5 was two-fifths of a second off the track record.

Bold Forbes won two-thirds of the Triple Crown, taking the Derby and Belmont Stakes (gr. I), and finishing third in the Preakness (gr. I).
