The Baltimore Planning Commission Wednesday granted its approval to the proposed expansion of Pimlico Race Course into an "entertainment destination" facility, though plans for a hotel on the site were turned down.

The Maryland Jockey Club, owned by Magna Entertainment Corp., has proposed revamping the aging racetrack with a new grandstand, larger track, theaters, banquet halls, and a hotel. A structure to house slot machines should they be approved is also part of the plan, the Baltimore Sun reports.

The Preakness Stakes (gr. I) would continue to be run at Pimlico during construction. The Planning Commission will send a list of its recommendations for the project to the City Council, which will vote on final approval.
