Remsen Stakes winner Read the Footnotes will launch his 2004 3-year-old campaign in Saturday's $250,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park, fresh off 10 weeks rest and fast workouts for trainer Richard Violette.
"It seems like the Remsen [Stakes (gr. I)] was yesterday," said Violette about his colt's last victory Nov. 29 at Aqueduct. "There have been some moments where we thought it would never get here, but there's been moments lately where we've been saying 'Wow! It's coming up fast'."
Violette's expectations have a lot to do with how well his multiple graded stakes-winner is training leading up to the 1 1/16-mile test this weekend. A son of Smoke Glacken
Read the Footnotes most recent workout came Monday at Palm Meadows. He traveled five furlongs in 1:00 1/5 – just one tick slower than the fastest move of that morning at that distance.
"We're tickled to death by the way he's coming up to this race," said Violette. "He did it pretty easily. I wanted to really set him down and get him to come back blowing a little bit so it ended up being a fast time. But he's a fast horse and he's going to work fast. He did it well within himself and he was screaming for his feed tub the next day."
Read the Footnotes will be looking for his third straight stakes victory. The colt also won the grade III Nashua Stakes at Aqueduct. His only loss in five starts so far came in the grade I Champagne Stakes at Belmont.
