Officials of L'Agence Francaise have reduced the number of days for the August yearling sale in Deauville from five days to four by canceling the opening Saturday night session, according to the Racing Post. This year's auction will begin following racing on Sunday, Aug. 22 and continue through Wednesday Aug. 25. The Sunday and Monday sessions will have a mix of "select" and "better quality" horses.
The change was made following a meeting last December, a breeder told the Racing Post. He said vendors who sold horses on Monday felt their business suffered "because of a perception among buyers that there was a steep drop in the quality of lots between the select weekend sessions and the open sessions." In addition, two breeders from France said they had beentold the sales company was unable to find enough select yearlings to fill two days.
The sale is expected to benefit from a change in the racing calendar that moves the Prix Morny (Fr-I) to the same day as opening session. The card that day also will include the Prix Jean Romanet (Fr-II), a new event; the Prix Kergorlay (Fr-II); and the Prix de la Nonette (Fr-II).
