Michael Rowland, a jockey with 3,998 career victories, died Monday at University Hospital in Cincinnati. The fall occurred Feb. 4 when Rowland was unseated after his mount, World Trade, broke a front leg and collapsed on the first turn of a $13,900 claiming race. The horse collided with two other horses, injuring the other two riders.

Street said the authority extended its sympathy to Rowland's wife, Tammy, and children.

"Mr. Rowland was a talented and successful jockey, loved and respected by those who worked around him at racetracks in Kentucky and in other states," Street said in a statement. "The Authority will review the circumstances regarding this racing tragedy."

Rowland, a native of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., was the winningest jockey at Thistledown, near Cleveland, where he won 29 meet titles. He was riding at Turfway to be near his wife, a trainer at the track.
