Ryan Fogelsonger is unhappy riding in Southern California and is returning to Maryland.

The leading apprentice in 2002, Fogelsonger has been riding in Southern California the past six months.

"I am just unhappy here," Fogelsonger told Maryland Jockey Club officials today from Santa Anita. "It has been tough and very stressful. I am looking forward to coming home and am just counting down the days until I get back."

Fogelsonger won five straight meets at Pimlico and Laurel Park in a 12-month period. He left Maryland after winning the Laurel summer title and made his mark in Southern California with top 10 finishes at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, and Fairplex. But the 22-year old was injured in mid-December and missed a month. In the four weeks since his return, Fogelsonger rode just two winners.

"I have been thinking about the move for some time," added Fogelsonger, who won 419 races as a bug rider in Maryland from May 2002-May 2003. "Things have not gone as expected. When I got hurt I lost what little business I had. Trying to re-start was a difficult task so if I have to rebuild I'd rather do it in Maryland. I'm not ready for Southern California just yet."

He expects to begin riding at Laurel Park on Feb. 19.
