Everest Stables' Mambo Train swept past 1-2 favorite Perfect Moon and pacesetter Bradford and pulled away in the stretch to register a 2 1/2-length victory in Saturday's $100,000 Turf Paradise Derby for 3-year-olds.
The final time for the 1 1/16-mile event was 1:42.
Ridden by Emile Ramsammy (who earlier captured the $150,000 Turf Paradise Breeders' Cup Handicap aboard Irish Warrior), Mambo Train was steadied several times while in close quarters on the final turn. But in the stretch, Ramsammy angled the Kingmambo
colt to the outside and Mambo Train responded superbly, drawing off while driving in the final furlong.
Perfect Moon also rallied while three wide in the stretch but weakened under pressure from Mambo Train. Perfect Moon, the winner of last summer's Hollywood Juvenile Championship (gr. III) and the Best Pal (gr. II) at Del Mar, was 3 1/2 lengths in front of Bradford.
Mambo Train, who like the favorite shipped to Phoenix from his southern California base, collected $60,000 for his second win in seven career starts. He increased his lifetime earnings to $97,400. Marcelo Polanco trains the winner.
He paid $7.60, $2.80 and $2.10. Perfect Moon returned $2.20 and $2.10. Bradford's show was $2.10.
Five started after Point Dume and Wimplestiltskin scratched.
