Lanerie Rings Up Win No. 2,000

(from Fair Grounds report)
Jockey Corey Lanerie won two races on Saturday's card at Fair Grounds to reach 2,000 wins in his 13-year riding career.

Lanerie's milestone win came in the sixth race, a first-level allowance on turf, aboard Slow Walkin' John. Earlier in the day, he won the third race on Forty Ensign.

"This is a big milestone for me," said Lanerie, 28, who posted his first career win in April 1991 at Evangeline Downs. "When you start riding, you don't think about winning 2,000. You think about the race before you.

"It feels really good to win (No. 2,000) at Fair Grounds, because I began riding here very early in my career."

Lanerie is currently fifth in the jockey standings at Fair Grounds with 37 wins, including a win aboard Olmodavor in last weekend's Whirlaway Handicap (gr. III). He was second in the standings last season with 92 wins.

The native of Cankton, La., has enjoyed tremendous success in Texas, including four riding titles at Lone Star Park. He is the only jockey to win titles at each of Texas' three major tracks – Lone Star, Sam Houston Race Park and Retama Park.
