Castle Gandolfo, a group III stakes winner who was also twice group I stakes placed, will enter stud this year at John T.L. Jones' Walmac International near Lexington. He will stand for $6,000.

The 5-year-old horse is by Gone West and out of the Northern Dancer mare Golden Oriole. His dam, Golden Oriole, is a full sister to champion El Gran Senor. He was bred in Kentucky by Orpendale, a breeding entity connected to Coolmore Stud.

Castle Gandolfo was trained first in his career by Aidan O'Brien for Susan Magnier. He later was purchased privately by J. Paul Reddam.

As he heads to Walmac, Reddam owns 10% of Castle Gandolfo.

Castle Gandolfo was a good 2-year-old in Europe, winning the group III Juddmonte Beresford Stakes at the Curragh before running second to High Chaparral in the Racing Post Trophy (Eng-I) and to Ballingarry in the Criterium de Saint Cloud (Fr-I). In his second start at three, he ran 12th in War Emblem's Kentucky Derby (gr. I), and returned to Europe where he ran sixth in the French Derby (Fr-I). He was then purchased by Reddam, and could finish no better than third in seven subsequent starts, the last six in the U.S.

In his final start, he ran eighth in a Jan. 10 allowance race at Gulfstream. He retired with three wins in 14 starts and earnings of $214,408.
