Fasig-Tipton Midlantic's July sale of 2-year-olds in training and older horses of racing age will not be held this year in Maryland. The sale was canceled because its site, the Maryland State Fair Grounds in Timonium, will be used to accommodate horses during a major renovation of Laurel's stable area over the summer.
The decision to call off the auction was reached in an agreement between Fasig-Tipton and the Maryland Jockey Club, which operates Laurel.
"The sale will be back on the schedule in 2005," said Mason Grasty, Fasig-Tipton Midlantic's executive vice president. "But we agree that it is in the best interests of our local horsemen to use Timonium for a temporary home while work is under way at Laurel."
This agreement will not affect any other sales scheduled for Timonium in 2004. The next auction on the calendar is the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale of 2-year-olds in training, set for May 17 and 18.
