Santa Catarina, now retired.
Santa Catarina, winner of last year's Hollywood Oaks (gr. II) and runner-up in the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I), has been retired by owners Bob and Beverly Lewis after recently suffering an injury while training.
Santa Catarina was training for a return to racing with Bob Baffert when the injury occurred. The 4-year-old daughter of Unbridled had not raced since finishing fourth while making her turf debut in the American Oaks at Hollywood Park in July.
According to a press release from Craig Bandoroff of Denali Stud, Santa Catarina's injury was not career threatening but her strong pedigree and potential value as a broodmare prompted the retirement.
Santa Catarina, who is the first foal out of the Storm Cat mare Purrfectly, will be bred to A.P Indy
and likely be sold at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale.
The Lewises purchased Santa Catalina for $950,000 at the 2001 Keeneland September yearling sale. Her career ends with three wins in 10 starts with three seconds and two thirds for career earnings of $645,260.
