Portland Meadows set a new single-day handle record Monday when $657,311 was bet on the nine-race program.

The previous record was $640,000 handled in one day in December. Portland Meadows recently switched its live program from Sunday to Monday racing.

"This is why we made the change from Sundays to Mondays" said general manager Jeff Grady. "Many outsiders questioned the move but we at MEC Oregon are determined to make racing in Portland great again. We have been fortunate in seeing Oregonians respond with such enthusiasm."

According to a Portland Meadows press release, Sunday cards in 2002-2003 averaged between $150,000 to $200,000 in handle. Since the inception of Monday racing it has averaged greater than $450,000.
