NYRA Handle, Attendance Down Slightly in '03

Daily average attendance and daily average handle were both down slightly during the New York Racing Association's 250-day racing season in 2003.

On-track attendance averaged 9,585 at the three NYRA tracks, down minimally from 9,534 in 2002. Daily average all-source handle fell 1.8% to $10,953,180 from $11,148,698 in 2002. There were 256 days of live racing at NYRA tracks in 2002.

Total average on-track handle slipped 4.4% to $1,970,521 from $2,060,270 and daily average on-track handle on NYRA races was down 5.9% to $1,425,767 from $1,515,787.

"It was a difficult year for us in a number of ways," said Bill Nader, NYRA senior vice president. "We ended up the year losing a net of 11 cards compared to four in 2002. We were also hit hard with bad weather on key racing days throughout the year."

Total attendance for the 250 days of racing was 2,383,559. On-track handle on NYRA races totaled $356,441,637. Including incoming simulcasting, on-track handle was $492,630,288. Total handle on NYRA races was $2,602,103,288 while all-source handle was $2,738,294,945.
