Bare Necessities has Plenty to Spare in Pasaena

(from Santa Anita report)Bare Necessities, the 3-5 betting favorite, wore down Angel Gift in the stretch and drew clear for a three-length victory in the $76,050 Paseana Handicap for fillies and mares Friday at Santa Anita Park.
Ridden by Jose Valdivia Jr. at high weight of 122 pounds, Bare Necessities ran the 1 1/16-mile distance in 1:42.58. She paid $3.20, $2.40 and $2.10. Wally Dollase is the trainer for Iron County Farms Inc.
Angel Gift, Gary Stevens riding at 116 pounds, entered the stretch with a 1 ½-length lead, but was unable to hold off the winner and settled for second place. The runner-up, owned in part by former jockey Eddie Delahoussaye, returned $3.40 and $2.10.
It was 2 ½ lengths back to La Tour, Alex Solis aboard at 117 pounds, and a $2.10 show payoff. Southern Oasis and Impetuous Fling completed the order of finish. Tropical Blossom was scratched.
A 5-year-old gray Kentucky bred by Silver Deputy, Bare Necessities won four stakes races at four different tracks last year while earning over $430,000. The Paseana was her first start of 2004.
Bare Necessities has an overall record of 8-1-4 from 18 starts. The $45,630 winner's share increased her bankroll to $778,911. The Paseana was her first race at Santa Anita since a victory in the Santa Lucia Handicap last March.
