Because of a deep freeze and snow expected to descend on the New York metropolitan area, live racing and simulcasting at Aqueduct has been cancelled for Thursday.
Due to the recent cancellations, 10 races will be run at Aqueduct on Saturday and live racing will be conducted next Wednesday, a scheduled dark day. Saturday's regularly scheduled feature, the $100,000-added Aqueduct Handicap, will be augmented by the $100,000-added Affectionately Handicap, which was rescheduled from last Saturday's cancelled card. Because of the Martin Luther King Day holiday, Aqueduct will be open next Monday, January 19.
"We thought it was in the best interests of our fans and horsemen to cancel tomorrow's races early," said NYRA senior vice president Bill Nader. "The weather forecast is very poor and there is no reason to believe the forecast will change at this point. However, because of the number of cancellations this winter, we are adding a race on Saturday and a full card next Wednesday."
