Heckofaralph, who owns the Calder turf course record for five furlongs, races in the $30,000 El Gran Fernando Handicap Monday at that South Florida oval. The William Cesare-trained 7-year-old gelding will attempt to rebound from a sixth-place finish in the Smile Sprint Handicap on the main track at Calder in early October. Heckofaralph ran five furlongs in :54.96 in the 1998 Calder Turf Sprint Handicap, to break his own course record and equal the world record. In his lone win on the current year, he broke the five furlong turf course record at Gulfstream Park when winning the Hialeah Sprint Championship Handicap in :56.25.
Two horses that chased Heckofaralph home in the Hialeah Sprint, runner-up Wertz and third-place Sejm's Madness, are also entered in the El Gran Fernando.
