Hawk Wing, winner of the Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes (Eng-I) by 11 lengths, topped the International Classifications for horses that raced in Europe and the U. S. in 2003. The son of Woodman produced from the Canadian champion La Lorgnette (by Val de l'Orne) was weighted at 133 on the International, three pounds better than British-based Mubtaker.

The top-weighted horse based in the U.S. and third on the International was Ron McAnally-trained Candy Ride, who was assigned 127 pounds.

Dalakhani, the French Derby (Fr-I) and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I) winner, was accorded 132 pounds, making him the top 3-year-old in the world rankings. Highest-ranking U. S.-based 3-year-olds were Kentucky Derby (gr. I)-Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Funny Cide and Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Empire Maker, who were each weighted at 122 pounds.

Bred by Hill 'n' Dale Farm and trained by Aidan O'Brien for owner Sue Magnier, Hawk Wing retired in mid-year due to a knee ligament injury suffered in an unplaced effort in the June 17 Queen Anne Stakes (Eng-I) at Royal Ascot. The winner of five his dozen starts, Hawk Wing earned $1,604,286 before being retired to Coolmore Stud in Ireland.

The International Classifications, based on a horse's best performance in the year, are compiled by a panel of handicappers from the U. S., Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, and Australia.
