B. Wayne Hughes' Action This Day, winner of the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) at Santa Anita last Oct. 25, is scheduled to make his 3-year-old debut in the $150,000 Santa Catalina Stakes (gr. II) at 1 1/16 miles on Jan. 17.
The Santa Catalina is one of four stakes events on a three-day holiday weekend at Santa Anita that features racing on Monday, Jan. 19, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Action This Day, who begins the road to the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) in the Santa Catalina, was one of a record four winners for Richard Mandella on the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Chammpionships day card.
Action This Day, a Kentucky-bred son of Kris S. and the Trempolino mare Najecam, has won two of his three career starts, with a second in his debut, for earnings of $817,200.
"He's doing well," said Mandella, who has never won the Santa Catalina, which will be run for the 66th time. "The work (a mile in 1:39 2/5, Jan. 6) was good and he's maturing all the time. I'm happy with his progress."
