Gary Stevens to Host Eclipse Awards
Edited release from NTRAThe National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) has announced that Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens will host the 33rd Eclipse Awards program, to be held Jan. 26 at the Westin Diplomat Resort and Spa in Hollywood, Fla. Stevens made his acting debut as George Woolf in last year's critically acclaimed movie Seabiscuit.In addition to crowning one champion Horse of the Year, Eclipse Awards honor horses and individuals whose outstanding achievements have earned them the title of Champion in their respective categories, and to members of the media for outstanding coverage of Thoroughbred racing. The NTRA, the National Turf Writers Association (NTWA) and Daily Racing Form present the Eclipse Awards."We're thrilled to have Gary as emcee for this year's Eclipse Awards," said Keith Chamblin, NTRA Senior Vice President -- Marketing and Industry Relations. "His presence and winning personality will undoubtedly add to the evening." Stevens, a 1997 Hall of Fame inductee, won an Eclipse Award as Champion Jockey in 1998. A native of Caldwell, Idaho, Stevens has ridden 4,751 winners during his 25-year career, including three victories in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and eight in Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships races. "I'm proud to host the Eclipse Awards ceremony," said Stevens. "It's a night that honors so many of the outstanding horses and people that make our sport great. Winning my Eclipse Award in 1998 was a moment I'll never forget, and it will be a privilege to take part as the stars of 2003 get their due."
