Badge of Silver, who hasn't raced since March of last year, had his first five furlong work in 1:00.60 last Wednesday. He's doing so well that his trainer, Ronny Werner, said the son of Silver Deputy could make his comeback as early as Feb. 1 in the Whirlaway (gr. III) Handicap at Fair Grounds.

"The Whirlaway is coming up fast, but it is a possibility," said Werner. "We'll let him tell us when to run."

Werner trains the 4-year-old for Ken and Sarah Ramsey. He was sidelined last spring after fracturing his right front canoon bone. Werner said his charge would jump to six furlongs in his workouts this week.

"He's plenty tight," Werner said. "We have a lot of two-minute clips into him."

Badge of Silver's goal remains the $500,000 New Orleans Handicap (gr. II) on Feb. 29.

Like Sister, Like Brother
Trainer Eddie Kenneally's star in the barn is undoubtedly grade II winner Belle of Perintown, but her younger brother's stock is quickly rising.

Bogangles, the 3-year-old son of Joyeux Danseur out of Hot Match, had his final tune up for the $60,000 Black Gold Handicap this Saturday, working five furlongs in 1:02.60.

"That mare (Hot Match) has been good to us," said Kenneally.

Bogangles has yet to be off the board since moving to the turf and has Kenneally hoping for a good effort.

"He has been doing really, really well," said Kenneally. "You just never know who's going to handle the Fair Grounds turf course."

Comparing the two siblings, Kenneally says that Bogangles is "more relaxed and easier to manage" than his 4-year-old sister, who Kenneally described as "temperamental."

Belle of Perintown spiked a fever, causing her to miss the Truly Bound Handicap on Jan. 4. Kenneally said that she is well now, but that her next start is undecided.

First Five-Day Week
Thursday marks the first of the first five-day week of the racing season at Fair Grounds. The track will maintain a Thursday-through-Monday schedule from now until March 8, with the exception of Mardi Gras, when there is a live card on Fat Tuesday and the track is dark on the following Thursday.
