Trainer John Scanlan expects dramatic improvement from Toccet in Saturday's $200,000 San Fernando Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. II) for 4-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles.
The son of Awesome Again never got untracked when finishing 11th of 12, beaten by 13 ΒΌ lengths in the seven-furlong Malibu Stakes (gr. I) on opening day.
"Seven eighths of a mile is not Toccet's race," Scanlan said. "He's a horse that needs to be close to the front end, needs to go long, a mile and a sixteenth, a mile and an eighth, a mile and a quarter and he should do fine coming up in this race."
Toccet worked five furlongs on Santa Anita's fast main track Sunday morning in :59 4/5 under Victor Espinoza in preparation for the San Fernando, second leg of the Strub Series which concludes on Feb. 7 with the $300,000 Strub Stakes (gr. II) at 1 1/8 miles.
Toccet, who won the 2002 Hollywood Futurity (gr. I), has a 7-1-2 record from 15 starts, with earnings of $847,790 for owner Dan Borislow. Scanlan has five horses at Santa Anita, all for Borislow.
Probable for the San Fernando: Anziyan Royalty, no rider; Domestic Dispute, no rider; During, David Flores; Ender's Shadow, no rider; Excessivepleasure, Tyler Baze; Formal Attire, no rider; Spensive, Gary Stevens; Toccet, no rider; and Watchem Smokey, Kent Desormeaux.
During worked five furlongs Sunday in 1:00 1/5, while Spensive went six furlongs in 1:12 4/5, both for Bob Baffert. Domestic Dispute is scheduled to work five furlongs Monday under Alex Solis, trainer Paddy Gallagher said.
