Halfbridled, undefeated winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I), breezed 5 furlongs in 1:01 at Santa Anita Thursday morning for her scheduled 3-year-old debut in the Las Virgenes Stakes (gr. I) on Feb. 15.
Because of the filly's dominance over her opposition, her stamina-oriented pedigree, and her imposing physical presence, there already has been a great deal of speculation regarding the possibility of pointing her for the Kentucky Derby (gr. I). But trainer Dick Mandella said he's not ready to think about that.
"Right now, the objective is the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I), but who knows?" he said. "I hope I have to really worry about it around March or April. I hope it's a real burden on my mind."
The daughter of Unbridled, owned and bred by Wertheimer Farm, is undefeated in four starts, capturing the Del Mar Debutante (gr. I), Oak Leaf Stakes (gr. II), and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, all with Julie Krone aboard.
Mandella also sent out Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) winner Action This Day for a sold 7-furlong work in 1:27 2/5 Thursday. The son of Kris S. is being pointed for the Santa Catalina Stakes (gr. II) on Jan. 17. Mandella said the Sham Stakes on Feb. 8 would be the alternative.
