Lou Ulman's Search For A Cure joined the ranks of stakes winners with a thrilling victory in the final jumps to win the $50,000 Squan Song Stakes Saturday at Laurel Park, beating 10 other Maryland-bred fillies and mares.
While Darnestown and Bamba dueled for the majority of the seven-furlong test, jockey Jeremy Rose had Search For A Cure well placed off the disputed pace. Rose swung wide at the top of the stretch and got up in the final yards to score by a half-length, covering the seven furlongs in 1:25.15. Darnestown outlasted Bamba for second.
The winner paid $19.40 to win and topped a $137 exacta and $344.40 triple.
The victory was the 99th of the year for trainer Dale Capuano at Laurel and Pimlico. The conditioner ranks 10th nationally with 163 trips to the winners' circle.
Part of the winnings go to the Ulman Cancer Fund an organization founded by the owner's son, a three-time cancer survivor.
Bought by Capuano for $7,000 as a yearling, the daughter of In Case has now earned $107,340.
