TVG network is sponsoring a "Name That Colt Contest" in which the winner will share in the ownership of the February 2002 foal who is scheduled to begin his racing career in 2004.

The deadline for entering the contest to select a name for the son of Vicar -- Dear Abigail (by Dehere) is Dec. 22. The winner will have 5% ownership of the colt, who is owned by John Greely IV and Richard Sturgill.

The colt, who is at Greely's Wintergreen Stallion Station in Midway, Ky., underwent months of intensive care after being struck by lightning when he was two months old.

"He's obviously a gutsy horse and we hope that portends well for his racing career," said Greely, who raced to the horse's aid after the lightning strike and then cradled him in his arms on the ride to the barn where they were met by a veterinarian. "His heart was pounding, he was going in and out of shock and we had our doubts that he would make it.

The lightning resulted in a period of blindness and other serious ailments for the colt, who was unable to go outside and run around for several months after the incident.

"But we never gave up on his becoming a race horse, said Greely. "He's got a very strong pedigree...We feel he can make some noise on the racetrack.

The winning name will be selected by Greely and Sturgill. The horse will likely be shipped to Hollywood Park to join the stable of trainer Beau Greely, John's brother.

"We are thrilled to be able to offer our viewers the opportunity to become part of this great equine interest story, said Marci Miller, TVG's vice president of marketing. "We thank John Greely for his willingness to reach out to our fans, and for his generosity in sharing ownership in the horse. You can be sure we'll follow his career closely.

Fans can enter the contest online by going to www.TVGnetwork.com or by sending a post card or letter to "Name That Colt, 19545 NW Von Neumann Drive, Suite 210, Beaverton, OR 97006.
