The purse for the Gallant Bob Handicap, a race named for the Eclipse Award-winning sprinter of 1975, was raised from $100,000 to $150,000 by Philadelphia Park Tuesday in an attempt to lure a quality field. The six-furlong test for 3-year-olds will be run Saturday at the Bensalem, Pa., racetrack.
A field of eight is expected to go in the event, including multiple stakes winners Ultimate Warrior, Boots On Sunday, and Never Wink.
Gallant Bob was based at Keystone Race Track, now Philadelphia Park, and competed at other tracks in the Delaware Valley. In 1976, My Juliet, another Keystone-based runner, won the Eclipse Award for sprinters.
