Gulfstream Park will once again offer maiden turf races beginning with the track's 2001 meet, David S. Romanik, the South Florida oval's president, announced Friday. Gulfstream discontinued maiden turf racing following the 1997 meet.
"The return of maiden turf races will provide additional opportunities for our horseman and I am certain that this news will be warmly received," said Robert D. Umphrey, the track's director of racing and racing secretary.
In recent year's, South Florida horseman either raced their maidens on the main track, in turf allowance events, or shipped to Tampa Bay Downs.
The track will offer one maiden turf race per week for 3-year-olds of each sex. Turf maiden heats for older horses will be written occasionally throughout the meeting.
