San Sebastian won the Prix du Cadran Fouquet's Barriere (Fr-I) Sunday at Longchamp, winning by a 1/2 length over Persian Punch. Mrs. Michael Watt's 6-year-old gelding had previously finished second and third in two prior starts in the race for horses 4-years-old and older.
Bred by Meon Valley Stud, San Sebastian (Niniski--Top of the League, by High Top) raced from just off the pace, moved into contention with a 1/4 mile to run, and assumed the lead about 100 yards from the wire to complete the 2 1/2 miles in 4:14.10. Over good going, Royal Rebel finished third, followed by Churlish Charm, Enzeli, Tajoun, Le Tintoret, Three Cheers, and Katun.
In his most recent start, San Sebastian finished sixth in the 2 1/4-mile Great North Eastern Railway Doncaster Cup (Eng-III), in which Enzeli, Churlish Charm, and Persian Punch finished one-two-three, respectively. The win is the first group stakes victory for San Sebastian, who improved his career mark to eight wins from 29 starts.
