Shadwell Stable's Altibr rallied in deep stretch to win the $451,200 Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile Stakes (gr. IIT) Saturday, breaking the stakes record and equaling the Keeneland record for a mile on turf in the process. Over firm turf, Altibr completed the mile in 1:33.72. In October 1995, Very Special Lite completed a mile on turf at Keeneland in 1:33 3/5 while winning the Bryan Station Stakes.
A pack of four horses contested the early pace, including Field Cat, who was caught wide on the first turn. Pratella, the lone mare in the field, took control of the pace on the backstretch and led the field into the second turn. Betting favorite Super Quercus, trailing the field early, began to move up along the rail on the second turn but was trapped behind a wall of horses in the stretch as Strategic Mission took the lead. Altibr rallied down the center of the course under jockey Richard Migliore to take the lead in the final 1/16 of a mile to win by a neck over Strategic Mission at the wire.
Quiet Resolve finished third, followed by Aly's Alley, Pratella, Super Quercus, Garbu, Medievil Hero, and Field Cat.
Sent off at over 5-1, Altibr returned $12.80, $6.80, and $5.20. Stategic Mission paid $23.80 and $11.60. Quiet Resolve, the 3-1 second wagering choice, paid $3.60. The exacta returned $214.40.
The win is the first in a graded stakes for the Kiaran McLaughlin-trained Altibr. Earlier in the year, he won a one-mile allowance race at Saratoga before finishing second to Hap in the Fourstardave Handicap (gr. IIT). In Dubai as a 4-year-old, he won round two of the listed Maktoum Challenge, a 1 1/8-mile main track event. Altibr earned $279,744 for the win, his fifth in 15 starts. Altibr (Diesis--Love's Reward, by Nonoalco) was bred in Kentucky by Indian Creek and Claude McGaughey. (Chart, Equibase
