A pair of D. Wayne Lukas-trained fillies topped the Churchill Downs work tab Thursday morning. Surfside went five furlongs in 1:00 4/5 under exercise rider Stacey Maker. The 3-year-old daughter of Seattle Slew--Flanders finished second to Spain in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I), and she is expected to make her next start in either the Falls City Handicap (gr. III, Churchill, Nov. 23) or the Clark Handicap (gr. II, Churchill, Nov. 24).
Lukas also sent out Overbrook Farm's Cash Deal for a five-furlong drill over the fast main track. She was timed in :59, handily, in the third fastest of 29 works at the distance Thursday. The filly is expected to make her next start in the Golden Rod Stakes (gr. II) at Churchill Nov. 25.
River City Handicap (gr. IIIT) winner Brahms, preparing for a possible start against War Chant in the Early Times Hollywood Derby (gr. IT), worked six furlongs in 1:10 3/5. Iroquois (gr. III) winner Meetyouatthebrig breezed five furlongs in 1:03 3/5 in anticipation of the Brown & Williamson Kentucky Jockey Club (gr. II), and fellow Elliott Walden trainee Golden Temper, a probable Falls City starter, completed six furlongs in 1:12 1/5.
