Diamond A Racing Corporation's Reciclada stalked the pace set by Go to the Ink before digging in gamely to win the Delta Air Lines Top Flight Handicap (gr. II) at Aqueduct on Friday. The 5-year-old Chilean-bred mare trained by Richard Mandella won by 1 1/4 lengths over Country Hideaway, with Critical Eye third.
Ridden by Jerry Bailey as the even-money favorite, Reciclada completed the 1 mile in 1:35.54 and paid $4.10, $2.80, and $2.20. Country Hideaway was worth $3.40 and $2.20, and Critical Eye returned $2.30.
The victory was the ninth in 21 career starts for Reciclada and her third win in 11 starts this year. Previous to the Top Flight, Reciclada was second in Chilukki's track record setting performance in the Churchill Downs Distaff handicap (gr. II) on the Breeders' Cup championship day card.
"She is settling down and learning now," Mandella said by telephone from California, where he watched the Top Flight on TVG. "Coming from South America, some horses can get confused." He noted that after her Churchill race, Reciclada was sent to trainer Tom Bush to prep for the Top Flight. "I think Tom is an excellent horseman who is not used enough. I plan to move horses in and out of New York during the winter, and Tom is going to be a big help."
