New Economy Enhances Value With Another Graded Victory

Edited from track reports
The 5-year-old mare New Economy, bred and owned by Robert S. Evans and trained by H. Graham Motion, won the $100,000 My Charmer Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Calder Race Course on Saturday with jockey Rosemary Homeister, Jr. in the irons.

Lightly raced this year, New Economy last visited the winner‚s circle after taking the La Prevoyante Handicap (gr. IIT) here last December. Between then and now, she has raced only four times, with her best finish, a third place, coming in the WinStar Galaxy (gr. IIT) at Keeneland in October.

Ivanavinalot set the pace in the 1 18-mile turf race, and almost went wire-to-wire under jockey Danny Scocca until Something Ventured and New Economy made their late runs in the stretch to overtake her in the final furlong. New Economy covered the distance in 1:46 4/5 and defeated Something Ventured by a half-length. Ivanavinalot held on for the show, 2 1/2 lengths behind Something Ventured.

New Economy, sent off at 7-to-1 odds, paid $16.80 for the win; Something Ventured, the 2-to-1 favorite, returned $4.60 to place; Ivanavinalot, a 25-to-1 longshot, paid $13.60 to show, completing a $1,496.80 trifecta.

"She's actually quite consistent when she has a good pace in front of her and firm ground, which she had today," Motion said. "She missed some races this spring because of rain and then the summer with an abscess in her foot--as bad as I've ever seen. We got over that and she ran well enough at Keeneland, but I kind of rushed to get to the race in Canada (E.P. Taylor, 8th), and then it came up soft, which she doesn't handle. We'll go on and try to win the La Prevoyante (Dec. 27) again. These are the two races we've been pointing for all along. A decision will be made at some point after that whether to retire her in the spring or go on with her. Mr. (Robert) Evans is a breeder and, obviously, she is now a valuable broodmare."

A daughter of Red Ransom produced from the Proud Truth mare Sunyata, New Economy has now won six of 19 career starts.
