Sunday Silence Sires 100th Stakes Winner

Sunday Silence, who continues to rewrite the Japanese record book as a stallion, came through with his 100th stakes winner. On Nov. 29, two of his sons, Cheers Brightly and Mystic Age, won stakes at Kyoto. Cheers Brightly, a 5-year-old, captured the Keihan Hai (Jpn-III), and 2-year-old Mystic Age took the Kyoto Nisai Stakes.

Sunday Silence's accomplishment proved historic in that the son of Halo became only the third Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner to reach that goal. He joined Northern Dancer and Seattle Slew, both of whom stood in North America.

Sunday Silence, the 1989 Derby winner, also won the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) and Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) and was voted Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male. Sunday Silence, who was produced from the Understanding mare Wishing Well, stood at the Yoshida family's Shadai Stallion Station prior to his death in the summer of 2002.
