Magna Entertainment's "Super Track Racing Series" Saturday, March 10, has been reduced to just a pair of races, carded as the ninth and 10th, on Gulfstream's Florida Derby card.
"We didn't want to run unbalanced fields," Gulfstream president Scott Savin said of the reason for canceling four of the series races. "We wanted to have an approximately even number of runners from each track -- six against six or six against five -- so that fans could make their 'team wager' bets."
Only 21 California runners entered for the Gulfstream races, which means the nine runners not in the Super Track series races will be dispersed among four other restricted stakes on the card that will carry $100,000 purses.
The first six Super Track races, scheduled for March 3 at Santa Anita Park, had been previously canceled by Magna officials, who cited lack of preparation time. Santa Anita did card some of them with $75,000 purses to augment its "Big Cap" program.
