Quarter-horse trainer Robert Gilbert remained hospitalized in critical condition Thursday for injuries he suffered when he was attacked at Los Alamitos race track in California.
Gilbert, 56, was found badly beaten early Wednesday morning in front of an area where trainers park their trailers.
Security officers discovered the semi-conscious Gilbert, who had injuries to his face, police said. Track officials said Gilbert first refused medical assistance but later was taken to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. He underwent surgery and was later admitted to the intensive-care unit.
Cypress police don't have any suspects at this point and are investigating the assault as an attempted murder.
Gilbert has been based at Los Alamitos for the past 20 years after moving from Texas. He has racked up 437 wins and is 13th on the track's all-time trainer list.
