Beautiful Noise holds off High Walden to win the grade II, $150,000 Santa Ana Handicap on Sunday.
Janis R. Whitham's homebred Beautiful Noise earned her first stakes victory Sunday at Santa Anita, winning the $150,000 Santa Ana Handicap (gr. II) by a head over High Walden. Under jockey Chris McCarron, the 14-5 favorite completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.27 on a firm turf course.

"I'll tell you what, this mare runs her race every time," McCarron said. "She's just extremely honest and today was a big day for her."

Matiere Grise finished third, three-quarter lengths behind High Walden. Aviate came home fourth, followed by Rare Charmer, Vapor Trail, Balboa Park, New Story, No Matter What, Running Flame, Mary Kies, and Brianda.

Beautiful Noise (Sunny's Halo - Listen Well, by Secretariat) is a 5-year-old filly trained by Ron McAnally. Prior to her Santa Ana win, Beautiful Noise best showing in a stakes race was a pair of second-place finishes, including a head defeat to Smooth Player in the Las Palmas Handicap (gr. IIT) last year.

"She's a steady filly, she doesn't really have that real quick burst of speed. But she keeps coming," McAnally said.

Beautiful Noise returned $7.60, 4.00, and 2.80. High Walden paid $6.60 and $5. Matiere Grise was worth $8 to show. The $1 exacta paid $25.30. (Chart, Equibase)
