Frank Manganero's Mambo Slew gained a clear advantage in the stretch and held off a late charge from Ticker Tape for a 1 1/2-length victory in the $100,000 Miesque (gr. IIIT) for 2-year-old fillies battling on the Hollywood Park turf Friday.

With Mike Smith in the irons for trainer Patrick Biancone, the Kentucky-bred Kingmambo filly was making her first start against winners as the 3-1 favorite in a field of 11. She completed the mile on a firm course in 1:36. Ticker Tape, ridden by Julie Krone, was a half-length ahead of Winendynme, who nipped Amorama by a nose for third.

Mambo Slew, in second slightly off the rail, stalked Very Vegas, who broke off from the field to lead by five lengths on the backstretch while clicking off fractions of :23 2/5, :47 and 1:11 2/5. Mambo Slew made her bid at the head of the stretch between the pacesetter and Winendynme, and managed to edge away in the late stages.

The English-bred Ticker Tape, last down the backstretch while saving ground, swung wide coming out of the final turn and finished fast.

Cousineau, th 7-2 second choice, finished in a dead heat for fifth with Shadow Of Mine. Vencedora, Secret Corsage, Very Vegas, Letsimpress and Madam Bahri completed the order of finish.

It was just the third start for Mambo Slew, who broke her maiden going a mile on the Santa Anita turf Oct. 18. She earned $60,000 for the win.

Mambo Slew paid $8.60, $4.80 and $3.20. Ticker Tape returned $6 and $3.80. The show on Winendynme was $3.60. The $2 exacta was worth $46.60.
