Tattersalls' December Foal Sale continued to break records in Newmarket, England Thursday, with the 23,128 guineas average up 34% on the equivalent day last year. The 18,000 guineas median broke the 2002 record by 5,000 guineas while the aggregate was up 45% to 4,371,200 guineas.

Last year's top price on the day was 75,000 guineas but eight foals passed that figure Thursday and three realized six figures.

A son of Darley's successful first-season sire Cape Cross headed the day's business when John Ferguson, acting for Sheikh Mohammed, outbid Peter Doyle at 120,000 guineas for a racy colt out of Lloc, a half-sister to July Cup winner Compton Place.

Paul and Sara Thorman's Hampshire-based Trickledown Stud consigned the colt for breeders John and Sue Turner from Stalbridge in Dorset.

"It‚s no secret that we support our own sires when we can," said Ferguson. "And this was a very athletic colt out of a half-sister to a July Cup winner, so it made sense."

Six lots later Trickledown Stud got 100,000 guineas for a Royal Applause colt out of Milly-M, bought by Cathal Ryan's Swordlestown Stud in Co. Kildare.

Ferguson bought the day's other six-figure lot, a Xaar colt out of Indian Imp who realized 110,000 guineas to the delight of Co. Meath breeder John Davison, selling through Ballybin Stud. Camas Park Stud's Timmy Hyde was underbidder.

The sale continues today with Wafic Said's dispersal set to be a highlight..
