The $500,000 Lone Star Derby, the richest race in Texas, attracted a field of eight including the blossoming Hoovergetthekeys. The former $32,000 claimer from Northern California comes into the race off back-to-back stakes wins and will be the 9-5 favorite Saturday in Lone Star Park's feature race. The second choice in the field is Fifty Stars, who scored a major upset in the Louisiana Derby (gr. II) at Fair Grounds. His morning line is 2-1. This year Lone Star Park changed the date of its premier race to make it a more appealing prep for the Kentucky Derby (gr. I). The Lone Star Derby was run two weeks before the Kentucky Derby last year. A $1 million bonus will be offered again for the horse that wins the Lone Star Derby and any race in the Triple Crown series.
Vying for the bonus are the following:
1. Take a Gamble/Ardoin/20-1
2. Gift of the Eagle/Murphy/5-1
3. Halo's Shadow/Nolan/30-1
4. Percy Hope/Court/9-2
7. Me And Thee/Bourque/12-1
8. Fifty Stars/Meche/2-1
