Scat Sam Man Knocked Out of Ky. Jockey Club

(from Churchill Downs notes)
An injury suffered in a Tuesday workout has knocked Walter "Buddy" New's Scat Sam Man out of Saturday's $200,000-added Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II) for 2-year-olds.

The son of Scatmandu, a winner of two of three career starts and an impressive allowance winner in his most recent outing at Churchill Downs, loomed as one of the major threats to the favored The Cliff's Edge in the 1 1/16-mile race. But trainer Tom Amoss said the colt did not return well from Tuesday's half-mile work in :50 over a "fast" track at Churchill Downs. The breeze was the slowest of nine recorded at the distance.

"He hurt himself in his work," said Amoss. "He's going to be out of consideration for the next 60 days for anything." Amoss did not reveal the exact nature of the injury, but said he anticipated a full recovery and said he looked forward to "running him in the spring."

Scat Sam Man completed his juvenile campaign with a record of 2-0-0 in three races and earned $45,215.

Courtlandt Farm's Commendation, winner of the $100,000 Bourbon County Stakes on the Keeneland turf, arrived at Churchill Downs on Wednesday to continue his preparation for the Kentucky Jockey Club. He has been training at Maryland's Fair Hill training center.

The son of Capote, trained by Graham Motion, has a record of 3-0-0 in five races, but all three victories have come on the grass. His lone start on the main track was an eighth place finish in his debut at Saratoga in a 6 1/2-furlong race won by the well-regarded Value Plus.

Susan and Clinton Atkins' Saltire breezed four furlongs on Wednesday in preparation for the Kentucky Jockey Club. The D. Wayne Lukas-trained son of Kingmambo covered the distance in :50.80 over a "fast" surface, a move that ranked 18th out of 23 at the distance.

With the loss of Scat Sam Man, a prospective field of seven is shaping up for the Kentucky Jockey Club. Along with The Cliff's Edge and Commendation, likely starters include Proper Prado, Gran Prospect, Mach Speed, Jamian, and Saltire.
