Chris McCarron rode his first winner at old Bowie Race Course in 1974, and on Saturday, he'll have a chance to ride the 7,000th winner of his career in Maryland during the "Spring Challenge" at Pimlico Race Course.
McCarron, 46, will ride in four stakes, including the $200,000 Federico Tesio Stakes for 3-year-olds. He's scheduled to pilot Tampa Bay Derby winner Burning Roma for trainer Anthony Dutrow.
"I'm really excited about Chris getting to 7,000 this weekend," Dutrow said. "He started out in Maryland, and selfishly I would like to see him reach the magical number on one of my horses."
McCarron, who won 546 races during his apprentice year, also won riding titles in Maryland from 1975-77 before he moved to California. As of Thursday, he was three wins shy of 7,000.
On Saturday, McCarron also will ride Saratoga Games in the $60,000 Star De Naskra Stakes and Case of the Blues in the $100,000 Geisha Handicap for Dutrow. McCarron's final ride of the day will come aboard Include for trainer Buddy Delp in the $100,000 Jennings Handicap. Include is Delp's hopeful for the Pimlico Special in May.
Pimlico also will offer the $75,000 Caesar's Wish Stakes on Saturday to round out its "Spring Challenge."
