Machiavellian colt, brought top price at Tattersalls December yearling sale.
Sheikh Mohammed, represented by John Ferguson, bought the two six-figure lots at the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale in Newmarket, England as the sale just passed last year's record figures.
The sale grossed 3,310,200 guineas for 161 head sold at an average of 20,560 guineas, which was a marginal advance over last year when 163 sold for 3,293,400 guineas, averaging 20,204 guineas. The median rose sharply from 9,000 guineas to 14,000 guineas this year.
Roy and Belinda Strudwick's Ballygallons Stud in Co Kilkenny, Ireland, consigned the top lot, a 130,000 guineas colt with a pedigree that Sheikh Mohammed knows well. By Darley sire Machiavellian, he is out of Jumilla, a mare who raced for Sheikh Mohammed.
"He's a quality, athletic colt with a pedigree," said Ferguson. "And he was consigned by a stud that has sold group 1 winners."
Ferguson paid 120,000 guineas for a Fasliyev filly out of Go Honey Go, a group III-winning half-sister to The Caretaker, dam of this year's Flower Bowl Invitational (gr. I) winner Dimitrova and group I winner Mutafaweq.
Ferguson reported she was also bought for Darley.
The December Sale resumes Wednesday with the first of four days of foals.
