Alannan set a track record, the second established Saturday at Churchill Downs in just three races, in winning the Churchill Downs Handicap (gr. II). The race was marred by an injury suffered by Rollin With Nolan.
The Churchill strip is lightning fast Saturday, Alannan running seven furlongs in 1:20.50. The old mark was 1:21.18 set by Distorted Humor in 1998. Two races earlier, Love At Noon broke the 6 1/2-furlong mark, going that distance in 1:14.34.
The fractions in the Churchill Downs Handicap were :21.68, :43.72; and 1:07.85.
Alannan has won two straight graded stakes since being turned over to trainer Carl Nafzger. He was formerly trained by John Tammaro, who disappeared in Florida in February, then was found dead in his car in a canal in April.
Rollin With Nolan broke down on the backside, then hobbled to near the eighth pole before being stopped by outriders and loaded in the horse ambulance. Dr. Wayne McIlwraith said of Rollin With Nolan: "Barring any unforseen complications, he's going to be fine. the prognosis is good for Rollin With Nolan. He's been X-rayed and is in his stall and OK. It's a distraction injury. The suspensory ligament is pulled apart. It's not a fracture caused by compression. We don't find it to be linked to a racetrack condition."
Alannan sat off the early pace, then moved to the lead and won by a half length over one of the early pacesetters, Bonapaw. Exchange Rate finished third, another half length back.
The $150,000-added Churchill Downs Handicap is sponsored by Lane's End Farm, owned by Churchill Downs chairman of the board Will Farish.
A 5-year-old horse by Conquistador Cielo--Dame Sybil, by Elocutionist, Alannan is owned by the Eaglestone Farm of William Marquard. He was ridden by Edgar Prado.
Alannan paid $21, $9.20, and $6. Bonapaw returned $6.60 and $4.60 and Exchange Rate paid $4. The exacta paid $140.80 and the trifecta $895.20.
