Andreas Schutz-trained Elle Danzig successfully defended her win 1999 Premio Roma (Ity-I), drawing off to a five-length triumph in the Sunday's renewal of the race in Rome at the Campannelle. Over a course listed as very heavy, the 5-year-old mare completed the 1 1/4 miles in 2:09.3 under jockey Andrasch Starke.
Elle Danzig led for the opening quarter-mile and then pressed Sumitas until that rival began to tire after running six furlongs. Border Arrow finished second, a half-length clear of Poseiden. Doowaley was fourth, followed by Premio Ribot (Ity-II) winner Dane Friendly, Crisos Il Monaco, and Sumitas.
Gestut Wittekindshof's Elle Danzig won for the 12th time in 21 career races. In addition to her two Premio Roma wins, Elle Danzig (Roi Danzig--Elegie, by Teotepec) has also won the German Oaks (Ger-II) and the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis-Bayerisches Zuchtrennen (Ger-I).
