Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel tied Charlie Whittingham's all-time record for victories at Hollywood Park Friday night when Irish-bred Anja won the fifth race to give Frankel his 859th win at the Inglewood track.

It took Frankel, who has trained at Hollywood Park since 1972, roughly half the time it took Whittingham to establish his record. Whittingham trained at Hollywood Park from the time the track opened in 1938 until his death in 1998.

Whittingham surpassed Farrell Jones as Hollywood Park's leading trainer in 1979.

Frankel, who was not at Hollywood Park on Friday to saddle his horses, has a record 23 grade I stakes victories this year. He had an opportunity to move past Whittingham in the featured seventh race, but Vacamonte finished fifth.

Frankel will saddle three horses Saturday – Staging Post, Epicentre and Continuously – all in the $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup (gr. IT).

Anja, making her first start in the United States, won the $41,000 maiden special weight field at one-mile on the turf by four lengths. The 3-year-old Indian Ridge filly paid $8.20 for the victory. Patrick Valenzuela rode her.

Frankel has a ways to go to catch Whittingham's Hollywood Park record of 222 stakes victories. He trails that mark by about 100.
